Why eat fruit and vegetables every day?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consuming at least 400g or five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. This I believe, is because fruit and vegetables play a major role in terms of one having a balanced and a healthy diet. They have undeniable benefits and help prevent many diseases.
Why eat them?
Fruit and vegetables provide the micronutrients your body needs to function. The fresher they are, the richer the micronutrients they contain.
Micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) are elements that the body needs but cannot produce. They must therefore be provided by the diet.
There are several good reasons why one must eat fruit and vegetables every day, and below are a few:
1. Rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants help to fight against the ageing of your cells. This ageing can be accelerated by several factors, including the weather of course, but also pollution, smoking, stress, alcohol consumption, etc. In short, many factors that we encounter throughout our lives.
2. Low in calories
Fruits and vegetables are rich in fibre and water and provide very few calories. In addition, the fibre they contain makes you feel fuller. This quality helps to fight against excessive weight gain. We know that excess weight is a factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.
3. Prevention of many diseases
Several studies show that eating fruit and vegetables protects against certain cancers and cardiovascular (heart) diseases.
According to the French Federation of Cardiology, eating 800g of fruit and vegetables every day reduces the risk of having a heart attack by 20%, and reduces the death rate from heart disease by 31%, compared to eating just one portion a day.
As you can see, eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day has real health benefits. It is recommended that you do this from a young age.
How do you go about it when you are short of time?
If, like most people, you have a hectic lifestyle, you probably don’t have enough time to follow these principles. You are taking the risk of ruining your health. Indeed, between work, home, children, family life, …etc, it is not always easy to settle down and take care of yourself.
